Behind the lights and magic of the Melbourne Town Hall Christmas light spectacular lies the expertise and precision of Lester Franks’ surveying and CAD design teams.
In 2013, Lester Franks was engaged to perform a high-definition 3D laser scan survey and deliver a highly detailed 3D CAD model of the Town Hall to enable the development of jaw-dropping animations that intertwined with the very fabric of the historic building facade.
A Lester Franks field crew required just a few short hours to perform a high definition laser scan survey of the Town Hall using both short and long-range laser scanners. To ensure optimal results, the facade was surveyed from both street level and elevated vantage points overlooking the building.
The resulting point cloud dataset of over 400 million points was then imported directly into a 3D modelling package where our CAD design team used this survey data to develop a highly detailed and accurate as-built 3D CAD model of the facade. The surrounding streetscape data captured by the 3D laser scanner was also advantageous in planning the optimal positioning of the multiple projector systems.
The client was then able to work with the facade model as a virtual 3D canvas to create the stunning light displays that form the centrepiece of Melbourne’s annual Christmas light projections.
The lighting of Melbourne’s Town Hall is just one example of Lester Franks’ involvement in high profile light projection displays on iconic buildings in Australia and overseas.Download a PDF version of this case study
